OFFICE OF SURFACE WATER TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 96.04
Subject: Distribution of Open-File Report 95-137, User's Guide to the
Culvert Analysis Program, by Janice M. Fulford
A new culvert analysis program, CAP, is documented by the recent publi
cations: Open-File Report 95-137, User's Guide to the Culvert Analysis
Program. The CAP program is based on the methodology described in Tech
niques of Water Resources Investigations Book 3, Chapter A3, Measure
ment of Peak Discharge at Culverts by Indirect Methods, and can be used
to compute discharges or water-surface elevations in culverts. It can
be used for computations for culverts with non-standard sections. It
will automatically compute discharge coefficients for type 1, 2, and 3
culvert flows and interpolate between high-head and low-head flows when
needed. The CAP program is computationally more robust than the previ
ous A526 program and will compute for flow conditions that the previous
program was unable to handle.
The new program uses input files that are compatible with WSPRO input
files. This should help users to consolidate channel-geometry data into
a common format. The program is available in personal computer (PC) MS-
DOS, or Data General (DG) UNIX version.
Paper copies of the report are available from:
Chief, Deterministic Modeling Project
U.S. Geological Survey, OSW
Building 2101
Stennis Space Center, MS 39529
The program and report are also available as a compressed tar file via
ftp by logging in as anonymous at qmsbs2. The CAP program is at /pub/
culvert as capPC.tar.Z (PC version) and as capDG.tar.Z (DG version).
Binary should be set before getting the files. Questions on the program
may be adressed to Janice M. Fulford, 601-688-1501.
