Release of Water-Resources Investigations Report 94-4168, "Users Manual for an Expert System (HSPEXP) for Calibration of the Hydrological Simulation Program - Fortran" In Reply Refer To: July 14, 1995 Mail Stop 415 OFFICE OF SURFACE WATER TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 95.08 Subject: Release of Water-Resources Investigations Report 94-4168, "Users Manual for an Expert System (HSPEXP) for Calibration of the Hydrological Simulation Program - Fortran" The purpose of this memorandum is to announce the availabilty of the subject report and to distribute documentation to Districts and other selected offices. The program HSPEXP is provided to substantially shorten project time for the hydrologic calibration of the Hydrological Simulation Program - Fortran (HSPF). We recommend the report be brought to the attention of technical and management personnel concerned with watershed and river basin modeling studies. HSPF is currently being used in District investigations (1) to provide cooperators a calibrated tool to evaluate the impact of proposed land use changes and water control structures on urban flooding, (2) to determine the contributions through time of nutrient loads from urban lands, agricultural lands, atmospheric deposition, and wastewater treatment plants and to assess management scenarios for the reduction of the nutrients, (3) to identify and evaluate possible options to reduce high water levels in a recreational lake in a rural setting, (4) to evaluate management scenarios for managing urban point and nonpoint sources, and (5) to evaluate impacts of water allocations and operations on frequencies of water shortages and water quality conditions critical to an endangered specie. HSPEXP is the product from a productivity enhancement project involving the Water Resources and Geologic Divisions. The program interactively provides the user quick access to tabular summary statistics of results, 11 types of graphic summaries, expert advice on parameter changes for calibration, input parameters for modification, and simulation of the HSPF model. The Hydrologic Analysis Support Section (HASS) is providing the distribution of HSPEXP. To obtain the program for use on the Data General, connect to hassrvares.er.usgs.gov/ by anonymous ftp, change to directory pub/SW, and retrieve files hspexp.tar.Z and readme.hspexp. The readme file contains instructions for installing the program. If there are problems installing the program, contact HASS by electronic mail, wrdapp@usgs.gov, or call Kate Flynn, (703/648-5313). For technical assistance contact Alan Lumb (703/648-5306) or Kate Flynn. To obtain a copy of HSPEXP for a PC running MS DOS, or a copy of the HSPF USers Manual, send electronic mail to wrdapp. Ernest F.
