Request for comments on User Requirements for Watershed and River Basin Modeling Software In Reply Refer To: December 30, 1993 Mail Stop 415 OFFICE OF SURFACE WATER TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 94.02 Subject: Request for comments on User Requirements for Watershed and River Basin Modeling Software A Basin Modeling Action Team (BMAT) has been created to focus and direct Water Resources Division (WRD) efforts concerning watershed and river basin modeling. This team is charged with reviewing policy regarding documentation and use of watershed and river basin models and modeling systems, establishing software requirements for these models and modeling systems, and coordinating software development efforts. The team has met twice and has decided an early priority is to obtain comments on user requirements for a watershed and river basin modeling system. System development will be based on user feedback and needs. The team is actively soliciting input from users of watershed and river basin models to help guide the development effort. This is an opportunity for District, National Research Program, and other Division personnel to provide input to future development efforts. Responses can be from either general or specific perspectives, including a general description of what a new modeling system should be able to do, what types of questions should be answered (particularly questions that can not be addressed with existing software), or specifics about what modules, algorithms, interfaces, or analysis tools should be included in a modeling system. The attached draft "Software Requirements for a Basin Modeling System" provides information about the current thinking of the team and gives several examples of different types of basin modeling uses. Recipients of this memorandum are requested to circulate the draft "Software Requirements for a Basin Modeling System" widely throughout their respective units. The team welcomes all comments which need not be constrained by the format or content of the requirements document. Please send responses to Lehn Franke, (OLFRANKE), WRD, Mail StopJ415, Lakewood, Colorado by February 1, 1994. Charles W.
