OFFICE OF SURFACE WATER TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 93.02

Subject: Open-File Report 92-129, Hydro-Climatic Data Network:
A U.S. Geological Survey streamflow data set for the
United States for the study of climatic variations,
1874-1988 by J. R. Slack and Jurate Maciunas Landwehr

The Office of Surface Water (OSW) is pleased to distribute
Open-File Report 92-129, Hydro-Climatic Data Network: A
U.S. Geological Survey streamflow data set for the United States
for the study of climatic variations, 1874-1988, by
J. R. Slack and Jurate Maciunas Landwehr. The OSW actively
supported the National Research Program project leading to this
report. All District offices participated as well, helping to
define the network of gaging stations on which the report is based
and assuring the quality of the discharge records.

The network, consisting of 1,659 stations with 73,231 station
years of record, was selected from available gaging stations in
every state. Man's activities are judged to have, at most, only
minor effect on the streamflows. The network excludes records
that have been lengthened by estimation and those that have been
constructed from records of other stations.

The report contains illustrations and tables, which show the
network stations, indicate suitable years of record, and give
basin characteristics. It includes a 5 1/4-inch diskette (high
density, DOS format), providing this information in electronic
form for ease in analysis. The information contained on the
diskette is written in ASCII character-type mode.

A CD-ROM is being prepared that will include the selected records,
which have been subjected to extensive quality-assurance scrutiny.
The CD-ROM, planned for distribution in early 1993, will have
software included to help manipulate and interpret the data. It
will be issued as a stand-alone numbered report. In the meantime
you may obtain streamflow records for the stations directly from
WATSTORE or through NAWDEX.

Additional copies of Open-File Report 92-129 may be obtained from
the authors or from the OSW.
