Kirby, V. R. Schneider, and H. N. Flippo, Report No. FHWA/RD-86/108, 112 p. The purpose of this memorandum is to distribute the subject report. The report describes the theory and methods used in a new Water-Surface PROfile computation model (WSPRO). The report also presents the results of some limited model verification studies. WSPRO was developed as a cooperative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Federal Highway Administration. Existing step-backwater programs E431 and J635 should be phased out in favor of WSPRO. WSPRO provides improved computational procedures for flow through bridges. It also provides considerable flexibility for analysis of alternative designs. A "user-formatted" concept for the vast majority of the input data makes the model considerably easier to use than existing programs. Some USGS offices are already using WSPRO, especially those involved in Federal Emergency Management Agency projects. User's instructions for WSPRO are currently in "draft" form and probably will be finalized in 6 to 8 months. Additional copies of the subject report (the supply is somewhat limited) and additional information regarding use of the model and user's instructions can be obtained from the Office of Surface Water. The primary contact for WSPRO information is Jim Shearman. Jim can be reached by telephone at FTS 959-5227 or (703) 648-5227 or via E-mail at JOSHEARMAN@RVARES. Verne R.
