Subject:  PROGRAMS AND PLANS--Report on the Activities of the
                              Ad-Hoc Committee on Alternative
                              Publication Formats of the Annual
                              Data Report

Attached for your information is a copy of a report summarizing
the activities and recommendations of the ad-hoc committee formed
to investigate alternative publication formats of the U.S.
Geological Survey Annual Data Report.  This report contains
summaries of all the data provided by the State and District
Offices on the questionnaires concerning the Annual Data Report.
The committee recommendations and report were presented to the
Senior Staff for consideration.  They adopted the following
recommendations:  (1) that two or three pilot reports be prepared
and (2) that information on computer access and services be
included in the Annual Data Report.  The committee will work with
the offices within Scientific Information Management and Program
Coordination and Technical Support to develop plans and formats
for the pilot reports.

The results of the review have been well received in most part due
to the efforts of the Districts in obtaining information.  The
improved data reports should provide more information that is
readily usable.
