SURFACE WATER BRANCH TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 78.05
Subject: PUBLICATIONS - Report "Downstream-Upstream Reservoir Routing"
by M. E. Jennings
The enclosed report provides guidelines for use of a computer program that
either routes a known inflow hydrograph downstream through an uncontrolled
reservoir to form an outflow hydrograph or routes a known outflow hydrograph
upstream to form an inflow hydrograph. A modified Puls method is used
for the routing computations.
The program should be useful in Federal Insurance Administration, HUD,
flood studies and also for studying the effects of embankment storage
at highway culverts and the effects of SCS detention ponds on downstream
flows.
When using the program, particular care is required in selecting the
time interval of the computations (DT). As noted on page 2 of the report,
DT should be smaller than 2 (S2/02) for all S/O values when routing in a
downstream direction. Not noted in the report is a requirement that DT be
somewhat larger than 2(S2/02) when routing in the upstream direction. Im-
proper DT values may indicate negative flows in the computed hydrograph.
The described program has been identified as program number A697 and
stored in the Reston computer. Access to the program requires the
following JCL cards:
/*RELAY PUNCH RE2
(Job Card)
// EXEC PGM=A697,REGION=150K
//STEPLIB DD DSN=SYS1.LOADLIB,DISP=SHR
//FT06F001 DD SYSOUT=A
//FTO5F001 DD *

Any problems in the use of the program should be reported to the Surface
Water Branch.
Only enough copies of the report are available for this distribution.
Additional copies soon will be available from NTIS, Springfield, Virginia,
as Computer Contributions.
