There have been several inquiries from Macintosh users about a bureauwide
license for Office 2001. The attached email is forwarded for your
information. It is recommended that offices purchase Macintosh Office
2001 from GTSI (1-800-999-GTSI) on an as-needed basis where they feel the
upgrade justifies the cost to their program. For a description of what's
new in Microsoft Office 2001 for Macintosh see:

Subject: no MAC Office upgrade

USGS MS Office Team and IT Managers -
the USGS was not able to negotiate a cost effective licensing agreement
with Microsoft for Mac Office licenses. Those USGS sites/programs that
wish to purchase the software with program funds can get a better price
off the GSA schedule from GTSI than Microsoft was willing to offer us for
1,000 licenses. For the similar reasons, we will not be buying upgrades
for the PC's to Office 10 that is expected to be released this summer. We
are strategizing to buy upgrades for both Mac's and PC's with FY2002
funding.
