Subject: Student Employment Options

RESPONSE REQUESTED BY NOVEMBER 30, 1999

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has historically supported many
different student programs. In an effort to clarify the similarities and
differences between them, we have prepared a matrix of the major student
employment and non-employment programs utilized at the USGS which is
available at http://www.usgs.gov:8888/ops/hro/recruit/compchart.html.
Offices should begin identifying next summer's student employment
opportunities now. Many top-notch student candidates make decisions
about their summer employment beginning in the fall.

USGS Student Employment Web Site

I encourage managers and supervisors to post their employment
opportunities for students on the USGS Student Employment Web Site. This
internet site provides information for students about USGS and its
programs as well as an automated student vacancy process. Students can
search and apply for vacancies via electronic resumes. The resumes are
reviewed and qualified applicants are referred online to selecting
officials, who indicate their selection electronically. All applicants
are e-mailed information indicating the status of their application. The
"Employment with the USGS" website received over 1,300 hits from
educational institutions in the month of October 1999. Contact your
Servicing Personnel Office for more information or to have your student
vacancy announced through this system.

INROADS

INROADS is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to develop and place
talented minority youth in business, industry, and government agencies
for purposes of preparing them for corporate and community leadership.
INROADS students are summer interns hired to work each summer through
college graduation. INROADS students are hired on SCEP appointments,
work at least 10 weeks during the summer, and depending upon
availability, may also work during college vacations. Students are hired
at the GS-2,

GS-3, or GS-4 level, depending upon which year of college the student has
completed and the work which is available (GS-2 for entering college
freshman, GS-3 for a student who has just completed freshman year, etc.)
There is a $3,000 sponsorship fee for each INROADS student. This fee is
paid by Human Resources Initiative Funds for up to

14 interns. The sponsorship fee covers the INROADS program's expenses in
screening students, teaching students interviewing and other work skills,
and conducting leadership workshops for students.

During the summer of 1999, USGS sponsored 7 INROADS interns in a variety
of scientific and administrative positions. If you are interested in
hiring an INROADS student in FY 2000, please complete the intern
requisition form and return to Sarah Griffin (SGRIFFIN) no later than
November 30, 1999.

We are excited about these opportunities and look forward to assisting
you in increasing the pool of diverse applicants for your positions by
utilizing the Student Employment Web Site and the INROADS Program.
