In January 1998, a meeting was held with the Personnel Office and the
National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges.
During this meeting, a recommendation was made to improve the public's
access to information on USGS employment opportunities for students and
new graduates. In response to this need and in support of the USGS'
Strategic Plan for Improving Diversity, the Personnel Office developed
an interactive web based system which provides information for
students about employment opportunities with the USGS. The Student
Employment Web Site (http://www.usgs.gov/student) provides information
about the USGS and its programs as well as an automated student vacancy
process. Students can search and apply for vacancies via electronic
resumes. Resumes are reviewed and qualified applicants are referred
online to selecting officials, who indicate their selection
electronically. All applicants are emailed the status of their
application.

This interactive internet site contains the following four main menus:

"Learn about USGS" - provides information on USGS Programs, major
occupations, quotes from students on why they like working for the USGS,
photos of USGS activities, and a map of USGS office locations where
opportunities may be available for students to work.

"Benefit from Student Programs" - contains a fact sheet on the two
student employment programs, a table of benefits available under each of
these two programs, salary charts, and frequently asked questions.

"Market Your Skills" - presents tips for students in applying for USGS
student positions, interviewing techniques, a calendar of USGS
recruitment events, and career fair tips.

"Apply for Student Jobs" - allow students to search for opportunities
and submit their resume online.

This is an excellent recruitment tool and you are strongly encouraged to
submit your student opportunities on this web site. When you have
identified a need for a student, please contact your servicing Personnel
Office and they can issue your vacancy through this system. You should
also inform your contact at your local college or university of this
employment web site so that they may circulate this information to their
students. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Barbara
Gunderson at 703-648-5245, or you can email her at bjgunder.
