MEMORANDUM

Note to Supervisors, Managers, and Team Leaders: Please ensure that
employees without access to e-mail receive a copy of this message

To: All U.S. Geological Survey Employees

From: Robert Hosenfeld (signed)
        Personnel Officer

Subject: Filing Training Form, SF-182

Effective immediately, Personnel Offices will no longer file Copy 1 of the
Training Form, SF-182, in your Official Personnel Folder (OPF). We will
continue to collect Copy 2 of the Training Form to enter training
information into the bureau training database, Automated Resources
Training System (ARTS). Offices should continue sending Copy 2 to their
servicing personnel office so that we can retain data for all training
authorized. Employee training information can be printed through ARTS for
any employee or manager who needs it.

A new training management system is in development which will allow
employees or staff members to prepare training authorizations through the
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Intranet and route them to appropriate
approving officials. The system will become the repository for all
training information. It will be directly accessible to employees and
their managers. Information from ARTS will be transferred into the new
system so that employees and supervisors can access current and older
training information. Employees will also be able to enter additional
training or developmental experiences into the database to create
comprehensive skills data for their use. When the USGS is ready to switch
to the new training management system, employees will be notified and
receive instructions on how to use it.

If you want to access your training information before the new system is
available, please contact your training representative. If you have any
questions, you may call Sherry Smith at
(703) 648-7453 or e-mail her at sasmith@usgs.gov
