Subject: Federal Transportation Subsidy Program

On July 26, 2000, John Berry, Assistant Secretary- Policy, Management and
Budget, issued a policy memorandum stating that all DOI employees would
be given the opportunity to participate in the Federal Transportation
Subsidy Program. Thus far, the program has been successfully launched in
the Washington, D.C., area during early October, and accelerated efforts
have been made to develop the foundation for a nationwide launch.

To support a nationwide program, a Transportation Subsidy web-site has
been created for this purpose. The web-site may be accessed at
http://www.doi.gov/pfm/travel.html. It contains a Q&A section, names
and phone numbers of coordinators, the transit subsidy application form,
a description of roles and responsibilities, and additional background
materials. If you currently use public transportation for commuting to
and from work, or would consider using public transportation under the
subsidy program, please familiarize yourself with the details of this
program by consulting the web-site.

After reviewing the materials, if you believe that you qualify for the
program and would like to participate, the application form will need to
be completed. The application form should be down-loaded, printed,
completed (manually), and signed by you and your supervisor. Additional
details regarding the processing of applications are also provided on the
web-site. The completed applications must be then mailed to the following
address (faxed copies are not acceptable):

                   U.S. Geological Survey
                   Mail Stop 209 (Joel Campbell)
                   12201 Sunrise Valley Drive
                   Reston, VA 20192

Based on information provided by the Department of Transportation (which
will administer the program), it will take approximately 30 days after all
applications are received before the Transit Passes can be issued.

Thank you for your interest in this very worthwhile program. If you have
any questions, please contact me by e-mail or telephone.
