Subject:	Year 2000 Activities

The objectives of this memorandum are to share with you the results of
four Water Resources Division (WRD) District Office Year 2000 (Y2K)
reviews conducted by the Office of Information and to encourage you to
conduct such a review for your office.
The primary goal of the Y2K SWAT teams was to determine, item by item,
compliance and remedial actions for: 

1.  Computer hardware and software testing for desktop computers and
laptops, software, and datasets. 

2.  Embedded technology - ensuring that all products or systems with
microprocessors (firmware) and associated control software that is built
in or embedded is Y2K compliant. Some common examples of embedded
firmware are included in the following kinds of equipment: laboratory
equipment, field equipment, office automation equipment, such as fax
machines and photocopiers; building infrastructure, such as elevators,
lighting and alarm systems; as well as the utilities, electrical power,
and telecommunications. 

3.  Telecom equipment - checking phone systems, local- and wide-area
network equipment.  

The reviews were instrumental in providing actual Y2K compliance
information for transfer throughout WRD.  A Y2K review for an office can
be accomplished in less than a week with a small team.  The review is
not difficult, but it is tedious.  A review should be completed soon so
that deficiencies can be corrected.

I encourage you to perform an internal Y2K review to insure that your
office's hardware, software, telecommunications, and embedded technology
are Y2K compliant.
