MEMORANDUM To: All USGS Employees From: Robert Hosenfeld Personnel Officer Subject: Leave Year Ending January 2, 1999 This is a reminder that the current leave year will end on January 2, 1999, the ending date of pay period 9901. Employees must have exhausted all use or lose annual leave to their credit by that date. The deadline for scheduling annual leave to avoid forfeiture is the beginning of the third pay period prior to the end of the leave year, which this year is November 22. Employees on extended sick leave must also request approval in writing by the above date, even if they do not expect to return to duty before January 2, 1999. Written approval of scheduled leave protects employees should they become ill or should the supervisor cancel the leave for an exigency of the public business. Many employees have restored annual leave resulting from the government "shutdown" furlough period in late 1995 and early 1996. Those restored leave hours will also expire at the end of pay period 9901; therefore, to avoid forfeiture of this leave, employees must use it by January 2, 1999. Please call your servicing personnel office if you have any questions about the requirements for scheduling leave.
