Advance Notice of Openings for One-Year Details to Office of Outreach Date: Mon, 02 Nov 1998 12:09:30 -0500 To: "USGS Employees" From: Gloria Johnson Subject: Advance Notice of Openings for One-Year Details to Office of Outreach MEMORANDUM To: All USGS Employees From: Michael McDermott, Chief, Office of Outreach Subject: Advance Notice of Openings for One-Year Details to Office of Outreach On November 30, 1998, the Office of Outreach will announce openings for liaison positions as part of the USGS Outreach Liaison Program. The primary objectives of this developmental program are as follows: * to provide professional outreach experience to a wide range of USGS employees; * to provide opportunities for liaisons to work closely with colleagues in other divisions and agencies; * to broaden the base of employees in program areas, both at headquarters and in the regions and field, who are familiar with outreach processes practiced by the USGS and Department of the Interior at the national level; * to provide program input and participation to the Office of Outreach; and * to provide bureau-level experience with outreach elements of the Bureau Strategic Plan. For the last three years, each division, as well as the Office of Program Support, has selected an employee for a one-year detail to the Office of Outreach as part of the USGS Outreach Liaison Program. These liaisons become an integral part of the Office of Outreach, performing all the duties of permanent staff and interacting with the top officials of our agency, including the Director, Associate Directors, Division Chiefs, and Regional Directors. Additionally, the liaisons have the opportunity to represent the USGS at meetings at the Department of the Interior and other Federal agencies, private sector organizations, and with the news media. Cross-divisional training is provided through field trips, lectures, and collaborative projects that emphasize the integrated science of the USGS. The long-term goal of the program is for liaisons to return to their divisions with the knowledge and experience gained during the course of their details to help make the USGS a more outreach-conscious agency. These details will be announced bureau-wide and the positions are interdisciplinary. All interested employees are encouraged to consider applying when the details are officially announced in January. Salary and benefits will be paid by the home office. For employees located outside the commuting area, funding is provided for enroute travel and transportation costs, and for lodging, subsistence, and local transportation during the detail period. If you or your supervisor have questions about the liaison training experience, please feel free to contact current or former participants. Specific questions about the liaison program administrative procedures should be made to Trudy Harlow (703-648-4483) or Mike McDermott (703-648-5771).
