Stiltner Chief, Distributed Information System Program Office Subject: DIS Infrastructure Direction Memo #10, EMail Etiquette in a Changing World The world of email is changing. Gone are the days when email consisted mostly of a few lines about work, such as schedules, coordination, or comments. Now, increasingly, email IS the work; that is, it IS the report, it IS the dataset, the graphic image, the web page, or combinations of all of these forms. Finished products are delivered as email instead of the email announcing the product. As we move in to this world, we all need to be aware of some common issues such as email etiquette, impacts on email systems, and security. We need to be aware of the following guidelines: - Do not open or execute attachments without having good anti-virus software activated and up-to-date. - Email that is hard to read will not be read. Expend the effort to make it easy on the eyes. - Don't send attachments without knowing the consequences. - Email that is too long will not be read. Put the headline up front. - Define the attachment for the reader and know the size before you send it. - Do not reply and forward email with the original attachment unless it is needed.
