MEMORANDUM September 2, 1999 To: All U.S. Geological Survey Employees From: Charles G. Groat Director Subject: Policy and Provisions for Reasonable Accommodations for Individuals with Disabilities It is the policy of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to ensure that all employees with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations to their known physical or mental limitations unless such accommodations would impose an undue hardship on program operations. We are proud of our accomplishments in hiring people with disabilities, and want to ensure that all employees, or qualified applicants with disabilities, are afforded the reasonable accommodations necessary for them to be full and productive employees of USGS. Some people are born with disabilities and enter our workforce ready to make a valued contribution to the mission of USGS. Depending on the individual, their disability, and the type of job they perform, they may need some type of reasonable accommodation to fully succeed in that job. Those of you who enter the workforce without a disability, could become disabled through an accident or disease, and need some type of reasonable accommodation to allow you to continue working. The attached policy and provisions ensure that all of us will receive the reasonable accommodation tools necessary to be successful in our careers. The attachment provides the USGS policy and provisions for accommodating individuals with disabilities. It defines a qualified individual with a disability and also identifies responsible officials and the procedures to ensure that reasonable accommodations are properly evaluated and implemented. The attachment is located on the USGS Intranet at http://www/ugsg.gov:8888/ops/eeo/reasonableaccommodations.html. Any questions regarding this may be addressed to S. Kaye Cook, Chief, Office of Equal Opportunity, or Tanya Cantrell, Disability Program Manager, at (703) 648-7770. Attachment
