USGS Remote Access To: " WRD Archive File, Reston, VA" cc: "Isabelle Halley des Fontaines, Chief, Br. Admin. Mgmt. Sys., Reston, VA" Subject: USGS Remote Access Date: Mon, 09 Mar 1998 16:45:29 -0500 From: "Isabelle Halley des Fontaines, Chief, Br. Admin. Mgmt. Sys., Reston, VA" The following note provides additional information on remote access at the USGS. However, there are few things that need to be clarified for WRD. 1. The questionnaire that is noted below was actually filled out by your System Administrator and has been handled for all WRD employees. So you do not need to fill out the questionnaire. 2. If you have not filled out a registration form but will need remote access at either Menlo Park, Denver, or Reston you will need to do so. The old SLIP line that used "montana1" is no longer operational. You can find a blank form either in the Common Use Area (5A137) or you can find copies in the bottom folder on my door (5B341). Fill out the form, have it signed by your supervisor, and then return it to the top folder on my door (5B341). You will receive an email message from bgilroy notifying you that you have been registered and can now use your account for remote access. 3. If you are having trouble or would just like help in reconfiguring your laptop for remote access please contact your System Administrator. Once you have successfully logged in using the new number and id/password you need to call Barbara Gilroy on x7048 and change you password to be one that you want. 4. If you have already registered but have not changed your password from the generic one, please do so before March 27, 1998. -- Daphne Subject: Additional information About U.S. Geological Survey Remote Access Date: Mon, 09 Mar 1998 12:32:39 -0500 From: Eleanor Fisher To: usgs_supervisors@igsrsparc4.er. Date: Mon, 09 Mar 1998 12:32:39 -0500 Subject: Additional information About U.S. Geological Survey Remote Access This is a memorandum signed by Barbara Ryan, Associate Director for Operations on March 5, 1998. In Reply Refer To: Mail Stop 105 #10508 March 5, 1998 MEMORANDUM To: All Supervisors and Managers From: Barbara J. Ryan/s/ Barbara J. Ryan Associate Director for Operations Subject: Additional Information About U.S. Geological Survey Remote Access This memorandum serves to clarify questions and concerns raised in response to my November 24, 1997, memorandum to you on the above subject. A copy of this original memorandum may be obtained on the URL cited below. The remote access pilot program will provide point-to-point protocol (PPP) and serial line internet protocol (SLIP) connections, similar to those used to connect to the Internet via an Internet Service Provider (ISP) from your home. These pilot services are available in Reston, Virginia; Denver, Colorado; and Menlo Park, California; using bureau remote access resources managed by the Office of Program Support. The attached "Frequently Asked Questions and Answers" is provided to help clarify concerns that have arisen about the remote access pilot program. We appreciate the interest and efforts of those of you who took the time to inquire about the bureau's remote access pilot program. The remote access pilot is an interim program in place until decisions about the bureau requirements and management strategy are made. When the bureau Remote Access Team completes its study and recommendations, the Operations Council will consider their recommendations and make a final decision about remote access and its administration. These decisions and an implementation plan will be posted on the Information Technology Infrastructure Committee's remote access web page (URL listed below). Thanks to those of you who have completed the remote access questionnaire. Your input will permit us to identify new requirements and to determine how best to provide for them. If you would still like to participate in this survey, please complete the online questionnaire posted on the ITIC's remote access web page. url: http://online.wr.usgs.gov:8888/wronline/committee/itic/ ra.html Attachment Director's Files, MS 114 Director's Chron, MS 114 POO Files, MS 105 POO Read, MS 105 Authors WGS:DO:POO:CLawson:EFinley:SHarris:egf:x4431:2/6/98 =0CFebruary 1998 Remote Access Frequently Asked Questions and Answers Q.Is there a single location where I can get specific information about remote access, the pilot, who to contact, updates, or merely have my questions answered? A.Yes, a single URL has been implemented that will enable users to reference a single remote access web site to get pertinent information about the bureau remote access program. This internal URL is: http://online.wr.usgs.gov:8888/wronline/committee/itic/ra.html This web page provides links to remote access pages that provide the following: o An explanation of what the remote access pilot is o A copy of the registration form o A copy of the November 24, 1997, memorandum from the Associate Director for Operations about the remote access pilot program o A copy of the bureau remote access policy o Bureau Remote Access Team (RAT) contacts by division (These contacts can help you determine if your division has appropriate remote access resources or if the bureau resources are better suited to your needs.) o Office of Program Support (OPS) remote access registrar contacts for Denver, Menlo Park, and Reston o New developments, including updates on decisions regarding new service= s and the status of the implementation of these services Billing information (once determined) o A forum for submitting questions or for accessing the answers to frequently asked questions (FAQ's) o Additional technical details about remote access resources for those who are interested in technical information o An online version of the remote access questionnaire. This questionnaire is being used to identify existing resources and determine new requirements. Q.Do users need to complete the registration form for any remote access resource (including those owned and operated by a single division or project office)? A.Completion of the remote access registration form is only required for use of the bureau remote access pilot routers. This registration form does not apply to division-specific remote access resources. Q. Where do I submit my registration form? A. All registration forms are to be processed by the Office of Program Support (OPS). During the pilot, users must submit a separate registration form to each site for which remote access service is desired. The primary OPS contacts for the three sites are Rob Weitzel (Reston, MS 809), Bob Ibison (Denver, MS 801), and Marcella Bonaldi (Menlo Park, MS 870). Your division's remote access coordinator(s) will be provided access to each of the regional registration databases for division planning and coordination purposes. Eventually, only one registration form will be required to access resources at all three sites.= Q. Do users have to complete all information requested on the registration form during the pilot? A. During the pilot, users must complete only the following fields on the registration form: o User name : Your full name (e.g., Jane Timmins) o Remote login ID: Your USGS e-mail address (e.g., Jtimmins) o User office telephone number (e.g., 703 648-6082) o User organizational unit: Division, Office, etc. (GD-ER-RAG) o Supervisor's signature: Because the Bureau Remote Access Policy requires a supervisor's authorization to use the bureau remote access resources, each person must obtain the signature of his/her supervisor. Cooperators and other USGS partners must obtain the signature of their sponsoring project chiefs or fiscal authorities. During the bureau pilot, account numbers will not be required since the method of cost recovery for this service has not been determined. It is anticipated that billing will begin by October 1,1998. All registered users will be notified well in advance of required procedures and billing charges. Q. Will a "toll free" number be available for non-local access during the pilot? After the pilot is over? A. There will not be an 800 "toll free" access during the pilot. The viability of providing a single nationwide 800 number for remote access service is being evaluated, and a decision will be made by the Operations Council at a later date.=20 Q. Will my FTS2000 calling card work to connect to bureau remote access resources if I am calling outside of the local dialing area? A. Yes, your FTS2000 calling card may be used. See your network administrator for details. Q. Are there any limitations on what a user can do or where they can go (on the network) with the pilot remote access services? A. The bureau remote access resources will enable users to access most of the same official-use resources currently available from an employee's office computer. Because of the limited number of access ports available, users will be asked to remain connected only as long as necessary to complete their official duties. Further details about what is defined as official use can be found in the bureau remote access and Internet usage policies. An online copy of the remote access policy is available on the remote access web page (see above for URL). Q. Can non-USGS employees (cooperators and contractors) use bureau remote access resources during the pilot? A. Yes, cooperators and other USGS partners may utilize the pilot remote access resources if sponsored by a USGS project manager or fiscal authority. Because these USGS partners may introduce special conditions that might not otherwise be tested and evaluated, their participation and feedback is an important component of the pilot.=20 Q. Will my network usage be monitored? A. Usage of remote access resources, particularly access to the world wide web, will be monitored in accordance with regulations, the bureau's policy on Internet use, and problem resolution procedures. It is important to remember that these resources are being made available as an extension of your office resources to perform official duties. Q. What are the bureau remote access goals after the pilot? A. The bureau's goals are to provide reliable bureau remote access resources that will enable employees and cooperators to access most of the same official-use resources currently available from an employee's office computer. This includes access to the Internet, USGS Intranet, and all office servers on which the user is registered (holds a valid account). =20
