Subject:    SAFETY-Hazardous Waste Coordinator Appointment and Training

This memorandum provides resource and training information for Hazardous 
Waste Coordinators.  U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) policy (USGS Handbook 
445-2-H, Chapter 8) requires responsible management and disposal of 
hazardous waste.  Water Resources Division implementation of this policy 
requires the appointment of a Hazardous Waste Coordinator for each office 
that handles, stores, and disposes of hazardous waste.  Guidance for 
determining if waste is hazardous can be found in the "U.S. Geological 
Survey Environmental Compliance Guide," December 1994.  Districts with 
multiple offices should consider appointing one coordinator for the 
entire district.  It is recommended that the coordinator have a 
background in water quality and experience in handling chemicals.  Duties 
of a Hazardous Waste Coordinator as described in USGS Handbook 445-2-H 
can be obtained from the URL:

The recommended reference for Hazardous Waste Coordinators is the "USGS 
Environmental Compliance Guide."  The Guide, with a distinctive red 
cover, has been distributed by the Bureau.  Additional copies are  
available from the Bureau Eastern Region Safety Manager, Stephen 
Eck (telephone (703) 648-7552 or send email to: seck@usgs.gov).  Another 
recommended reference is "Prudent Practices in the Laboratory:  Handling 
and Disposal of Chemicals" published by the National Academy Press.

The Hazardous Waste Coordinator should contact their State or local 
hazardous waste management agency for the appropriate training
