Lenox Chief, International Water Resources Program Telephone: 703-648-5053 Telefax: 703-648-6687 Email: alenox@usgs.gov Statement of Duties: The incumbent serves as a senior hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) team assigned to study ground-water resources of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The incumbent will serve as project chief for an investigation of brines in coastal sabkhas in the Emirate. As project chief, the incumbent will be responsible for design and implementation of a large-scale sampling program to determine areal and vertical variations in magnesium concentrations in brines contained in shallow aquifers. The incumbent also will serve as a senior technical advisor to local hydrologists and technicians assigned to the project. The project will be conducted as a joint effort between USGS research scientists, USGS team members, and local staff. Special Knowledges, Abilities, Skills, and Other Characteristics (KASOC's) Required: 1. Ability to establish goals, coordinate programs, and make sound decisions. 2. Ability to meet deadlines, maintain production, and work well with others. 3. Ability to communicate interpersonally and in writing. 4. Knowledge of ground-water hydrology, water chemistry, and a sound knowledge of ground-water modeling techniques. 5. Skill in data-collection methods and in analyzing and presenting ground-water information. Information about the assignment: In February 1988, the National Drilling Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) entered into an agreement with the USGS to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the ground-water resources of Abu Dhabi Emirate. The NDC-USGS Ground-Water Research Project has successfully carried out that mission for the past 10 years. Current project staff consists of three USGS employees and approximately 45 National Drilling Company technical, administrative, and clerical employees. All costs related to the project are fully reimbursed to the USGS by the Emirate government. An individual selected for this assignment will be given a 2-year, Excepted Appointment, with an option to renew if the project is extended beyond December 1999. Foreign Service Regulations apply to this position. Upon completion of the overseas assignment, the employee will be reassigned to a position in the domestic program; however, return to the current position or geographic location is not guaranteed. Housing and vehicles for USGS employees and their dependents are provided by the Government of Abu Dhabi Emirate. Al Ain, where the NDC-USGS Ground-Water Project is located, is a modern, westernized city of about 300,000 population located approximately 100 miles inland from the Arabian Gulf near the Oman border.
