TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 1998 The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Computer Technology Meeting 1998 (NCTM '98) is to be held April 6-10, 1998, at the Adam's Mark Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri. The theme of NCTM '98 is "Building the Gateway to Earth Science Information." USGS personnel will present technical papers and electronic demonstrations on computer-related activities supporting the mission and objectives of their respective division and various units. USGS professionals, who perform complex system-administration and support tasks, will attend training in the application of computer technology related to the system software and administration of hardware currently in use by the USGS. New and innovative ways of presenting data to the general public will also be a major focus of this meeting. PUBLICATION ----------- Director-approved abstracts will be electronically published as an Open-File Report on the World Wide Web at: http://wwwqvarsa.er.usgs.gov/nctm98/abstracts.html AGENDA TOPICS ------------- Technical presentations will focus on Supporting Event-Driven Information Dissemination during Floods, Earthquakes, and other Natural Disasters. Topics include network infrastructure; a cooperator perspective; recounts of recent experiences, and descriptions of software and hardware currently in place. Presentations on using the World-Wide Web will illustrate its effectiveness in disseminating information to our customers. Colonel Michael Brown of the Louisiana State Office of Emergency Preparedness will be the Guest Speaker. A Town Meeting will be held on Thursday afternoon. There will be short briefings and time for questions and answers on current information technology issues related to support of the USGS mission. Regional system administrators meetings hosted by the WRD Regional Computer Specialists will be held on Friday morning, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Issues specific to each region will be addressed. TRAINING/TRACKS --------------- Training will be presented within five thematic tracks: World-Wide Web, Telecommunications, Windows NT System Administration, Unix System Administration, and Programming. For NCTM'98, attendees will submit enrollment for NCTM training courses along with general registration on the Web. TRAVEL AND HOTEL ARRANGEMENTS ----------------------------- Flights are available into St. Louis, Missouri. The Adam's Mark Hotel is approximately a 20 minute ride from the St. Louis Airport. Shuttle service direct to the hotel is available from Airport Express (Phone: 314/429-4950) at $15 round-trip. Please note that parking in or near the hotel is a minimum of $12 per day. The 1998 per diem rate for St. Louis is $75.00 for Lodging; $42 for Meals and Incidental Expenses, Not To Exceed $117 per day. When making your reservation be sure to indicate that you are a participant of the U.S. Geological Survey NCTM '98 to secure the group rate of $75.00 (includes tax) for the single room rate or $95.00 (includes tax) for the double room rate. The materials fee for NCTM '98 is $200 per person. A $25 fee will be assessed each attendee to cover hospitality, a NCTM '98 T-Shirt, and Thursday evening entertainment.
