Alley Chief, Office of Ground Water Subject: Federal CBR ground-water networks--FY 1998 allocations The purpose of this memorandum is to provide information on fiscal year (FY) 1998 allocations for the federal Collection of Basic Records (CBR) ground-water networks. A memo describing the process for transferring the funds will be sent to all Districts by the Assistant Chief Hydrologist for Operations shortly. As in FY 1997, a total of $400,000 is available for the federal CBR ground-water program. Of these funds, $86,200 are allocated to stations in support of Compacts and other Interior agencies and $313,800 are allocated to the federal ground-water stations network. Wells monitored as part of the Hydrologic Benchmark Network will no longer be funded by CBR unless included as part of the revised federal ground-water stations network. Information about wells in the revised federal stations network can be found by clicking on "Table: Ground-Water CBR" under "National Programs" on the Office of Ground Water (OGW) home page (http://wwwrvares.er.usgs.gov/ogw). The FY 1998 allocations by State are listed below. Funding for data collection at the federal ground-water stations totals $160,000 and is based on cost information provided by the Districts and Regions. The remaining funds ($153,800) will be distributed evenly among Districts ($3,076 per District) to support startup costs. This funding should be used to (1) conduct a slug test to establish the integrity of the well/aquifer connection if such a test has not been completed during the past 2 years, and (2) ensure that the historical data are quality assured and in the USGS GWSI (and as appropriate, ADAPS) database. The funds for these startup costs will be allocated to Table 8 of the CBR allocation. We will be paying particular attention to the CBR wells and their quality assurance as part of District reviews. In addition, during FY 1998, we will be selecting additional wells for the federal ground-water stations network from the candidate wells provided by the Districts and Regions, establishing an external web page for information about these sites, and establishing an operating strategy for the network. Jody Eimers in the North Carolina District will be assisting OGW in this effort. Please continue to contact Jilann Brunett or me with any questions or comments on the ground-water CBR network at any time. ---------------------- ATTACHMENT: FY98 FUNDING ALLOCATION FOR GROUND-WATER CBR Shown below are funds to be allocated to Table 6 (Federal stations) and Table 8 (Network Evaluation).
