The NWQMC was established in May 1997 to implement a nationwide strategy to improve water-quality monitoring, assessment, and reporting activities essential to answering the questions from public and private entities related to water quality and is an outgrowth of the Intergovernmental Task Force on Monitoring Water Quality (ITFM). The Methods Data and Comparability Board was established along with the NWQMC in May 1997. The board includes Federal, state, tribal, and private organizations with a major commitment to develop and recommend technical and policy tools to promote water-quality approaches that yield comparable data and assessment results across organizations and agencies within the United States. Charlie's 19 years of experience with the USGS has covered a wide range of water-quality projects. As Chief of the Western Lake Michigan NAWQA Study Unit, he has worked extensively with protocols for surface water (physical, chemical, and biological) and ground water (physical and chemical). During his NAWQA assignment Charlie worked with numerous agencies to conduct methods comparability assessments, including the ITFM related Wisconsin Pilot study. He is also familiar with current water-quality initiatives of the USEPA, NRCS, USGS, and other agencies as a result of his Section Chief activities. Charlie's experience at arranging facilities, agendas, and proceedings for meetings and his communications skills (40 reports as author or coauthor) will be greatly appreciated by the members of the MDCB. Charlie will be working in this new position half time for a period of two years. He will continue to be located in Madison, Wisconsin, and work with projects in the District. Please join us in welcoming Charlie to his new position and feel free to contact Charlie (608/821-3810, capeters) to obtain any additional information concerning the MDCB.
