Montoya /s/ Deputy Assistant Secretary for Workforce Diversity Subject: Department of the Interior's Diversity Strategic Plan On behalf of the Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Assistant Secretaries and Bureau Directors, I am pleased to share with you the attached copy of the Department of the Interior's Diversity Strategic Plan. I encourage you to review the plan carefully and to become an active part of this major effort to achieve a diverse workforce throughout the Department. On April 15, 1997, Deputy Secretary John Garamendi created a Task Force to develop a strategic plan for improving diversity in the Department of the Interior. The Task Force was comprised of representatives from all of the Bureaus, Offices and the Diversity Council. The Task Force focussed on several areas: strategic planning for a diverse workforce, targeted recruitment, retention, quality of work life for employees, and accountability. The challenge that we now face as a Department is to ensure that the systems, policies, and practices outlined in the Plan are used to enhance the Department's capacity, strength, service and adaptability as an organization. This is essential if the Department is to meet the demands of its mission into the next century.
