Powell Manager, Department of Defense Environmental Conservation (DODEC) Program Subject: DODEC Annual Meeting - May 4-8, 1998 The Annual Meeting of the Department of Defense Environmental Conservation (DODEC) Program will be held in Tampa, Florida, May 4-8, 1998. The program will include presentations from the Water Resources Division (WRD), National Mapping Division, Geologic Division, and Biological Resources Division as well as participation from our partnering entities from the Department of Defense (DOD) and other Federal and State agencies. Training in many topics pertinent to the DODEC Program will be provided in concurrent sessions. AGENDA: An agenda for the DODEC Annual Meeting currently is being developed. The draft agenda will be found after February 1, 1998 on the DODEC homepage (/usgs/dodec/ dodec1.html) on the WRD intranet. If you have not been contacted and are interested in making a formal presentation at the meeting, please call John Powell at 703/648-4169 or by email to jdpowell. LOCATION: This year's meeting will be held at the Sheraton Grand Hotel, 4860 West Kennedy Boulevard Tampa, Florida; telephone 813/286- 4400; FAX 813/286-4051. The hotel is located about a 5-minute drive from the airport and offers a complimentary shuttle service. Reservations must be made no later than APRIL 11, 1998, to secure the rate of $72 for single or double occupancy. However, the Hilton will honor the per diem rate in effect during May 1998. When making reservations, please be sure to indicate that you are a participant of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) DODEC Meeting. REGISTRATION: In addition, please call Maria Calderon or Velvie Stockdale of this office at, 703/648-5001 to confirm your attendance at the meeting and field trip. POSTERS: Poster presentations have attracted much interest during past DODEC conferences and will be a major focus again this year. If you feel that your project would be of interest to the DOD and other participating partners, you are invited to present a poster at the May 1998 meeting. Some examples of topics that seem to be of interest to the DOD include characterization of hydrogeology of military bases, stormwater runoff, ground-water quality, geochemistry, bioremediation, modeling, geographic-information systems, geomorphology, constructed wetlands, geologic engineering, urban hydrology, digital-mapping techniques, and remote sensing. Poster boards (4'x 4' and 4'x 8') will be provided for your use. Tables will be provided if requested, and video and computer presentations are welcome. If you would like to present a poster at this year's DODEC Annual Meeting, please send an abstract or description of your presentation to Rich Daddow by March 31, 1998.
