Availability of hydrologic analysis software Date: Mon, 09 Feb 1998 15:00:09 -0500 From: Alan Lumb Reply-To: "Alan M Lumb, Chief, NWIS, Reston, VA" Organization: U.S. Geological Survey To: "E - All WRD Employees" Subject: Availability of hydrologic analysis software The Hydrologic Analysis Software Support (HASS) Team provides scientific software and related information for the Water Resources Division (WRD) on the World Wide Web. Some users are not aware of this source of software and information since direct links are not available on all Districts' internal web pages. This memo describes the information and services available on the web and where to locate that information. The following four categories of information are described: o how to identify the current release of a software package and how to retrieve and install a new or updated release (31 software packages have been updated since the last HASS tape distribution described in WRD memo 96-32 dated July 19, 1996); o how to register as a software user to receive electronic mail on updates and enhancements to specific software packages or categories of packages; o how to report problems with a software package or to request enhancements or new functionality; and o how to view or submit summaries of current software development activities in WRD. o current software releases HASS currently maintains web pages for 68 software packages, with additional packages added periodically. All of the software has been tested. Fifty-seven packages are available both internally and from the public pages; these packages are documented by reports or papers that have received Director's approval. An additional eleven packages are available for internal distribution. Additional packages are added as initial testing and installation are completed. The software has been grouped into the categories Geochemical, Ground Water, Surface Water, Water Quality, Water Use, and General. The web pages for a software package provide links to the source code and executables for one or more platforms, a summary of the software, version history and current release, platform-specific installation instructions, data requirements, and a list of documentation and related references. In some cases, the user's documentation is available electronically. Most of this software was distributed to the Data General site administrators in July 1996 for installation under /usr/opt/wrdapp. The UNIX command "what" followed by the name of the program can be used to determine the current version that is installed on the Data General. The web pages can be checked for the latest version for the Data General and for the availability of executables for other Unix platforms, MS-DOS, and MS-Windows. The web pages can be found at http://hassrvares.er.usgs.gov/ Refer outside users to the publicly accessible pages. These pages contain 57 software packages. These pages can be found at /software/ o registering as a user of a software package HASS has implemented a mechanism for registering to receive updated incormation for specific software packages or categories of software packages. Registered users will be notified by electronic mail when a software package is updated or when information that is of general interest to that audience becomes available. Software users are encouraged to register. To register, visit the HASS internal web page and select software registration, or connect directly to the registration page at http://hassrvares.er.usgs.gov/cgi-bin/software_registration o problem reporting using the web Users may now comment on HASS and NWIS software using the same problem reporting system: the GNU Problem Report Management System (Gnats). Gnats is a web-based system for users to (1) report problems with software, (2) request enhancements to existing software, and (3) request new functionality. Gnats provides an automated system for tracking the reports and requests received. With Gnats the status can be checked by anyone at any time. Gnats can be accessed from the HASS internal page or directly at http://wwwnwis.er.usgs.gov/cgi-bin/gnats_home.pl For some time now, HASS has been using the h2osoft@usgs.gov e-mail address as the recommended method for reporting problems and requesting help. HASS will continue to respond to mail sent to h2osoft. Please refer outside users seeking information about the HASS software to this e-mail id. HASS encourages USGS users of the software to use the Gnats problem reporting system, which will allow us to better track and respond to problem reports. o summaries of current development efforts HASS is cataloging current software development activities within the Division. This is an effort to make it easy for developers to know what others are doing and to contact those whose activities may be complementary to what they are doing. This page can be accessed from the HASS internal web page, or directly at http://hassrvares.er.usgs.gov/development/ To have your development activities included, provide a written summary of the effort, or a URL if an existing web page describes the effort, to mcrouse@usgs.gov. Include the name, e-mail address, and phone number of the primary contact person for the development effort. ************************************************************************* Alan Lumb amlumb@usgs.gov phone(703)648-5306 fax(703)648-5295 U.
