Presentations can be improved by using sophisticated presentation software such as Microsoft (MS) PowerPoint. PowerPoint provides tools to organize your ideas and create professional, compelling presentations. Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition offers integrated software programs to help you do your work more efficiently. In addition to PowerPoint for presentation graphics, MS Office Pro 97 includes Access (database), Excel (spreadsheet), Word (word processing), and more. With MS PowerPoint (and the appropriate peripheral hardware or a service bureau) you can create online presentations, 35mm slides, transparencies, audience handouts, speaker notes, posters, and an outline, all in a single presentation file. PowerPoint provides extensive online help. PowerPoint includes tools to help you create your presentation step by step, or you can use more than 30 professionally designed templates with coordinated color schemes. Presentations can be as simple as text only, or as complex as text with clip art, images, charts, equations, photographs, sound, and multimedia effects. You can record and save your own vocal delivery of your presentation. PowerPoint automatically links the slides with the corresponding narrative for a self-running slide show you can place online or on disk for professional presentations to remote audiences. MS Office Pro 97, including PowerPoint, can be purchased through the Department of the Interior Microsoft Contract. The cost for a single license is $303.80. For contract details, see the following WWW Page: http://wwwqvarsa.er.usgs.gov/admin/doi-ms-contract.html There is abundant commercial documentation available for PowerPoint. Additionally, many local colleges/universities and local Adult Education programs provide PowerPoint training. Standardization is good, and as more people across USGS use PowerPoint, there will be the capability to share PowerPoint slide presentations and components. User assistance for MS Office and PowerPoint is provided to WRD employees by the Distributed Information System (DIS) Program Office. PowerPoint users and potential users are encouraged to visit the DIS PowerPoint Support Web page at: http://wwwqvarsa.er.usgs.gov/ms-office/powerpoint/powerpoint_help.html The page includes a wide range of topics and information designed to assist new and advanced users of PowerPoint.
