Subject: Early Retirement Authority

We have received a number of inquiries from employees throughout the 
division about whether the U.S Geological Survey will seek an extension 
to our current authority to offer unrestricted "early outs" or 
discontinued service retirements to those individuals who meet the 
requirements for this retirement option. As late as last week, the 
bureau's Operations Council discussed this issue, and a decision was made 
not to request an extension from the Office of Personnel Management 
through the Department of the Interior for the early out provision, at 
least at this time. Our current authority will expire on December 30, 
1997.
