The USGS Internet Services Coordinating Team (ISCT) is pleased to
announce the first USGS Internet Workshop: 1997 Internet Services
Technical Exchange Meeting (NetTEM'97), to be held May 13-15, 1997, at
the EROS Data Center (EDC), Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  The meeting will
bring together content providers, computer and data-base specialists,
webmasters, managers, and other professionals committed to the goal of
presenting an efficient, high quality, seamless Internet-based interface
to USGS biological and earth-sciences information services.  The workshop
is designed to support this goal by providing a forum for exchanging
ideas, tools, techniques, and experience among participants through
individual and group presentations and discussions, and appropriate
training.

Planned topics include the new USGS Visual Identity, web server
technology, electronic publishing and commerce, market analysis, system
security and data integrity, intranets, outreach, and customer support.
The principal thrust of the gathering is to develop and exchange ideas
which will lead to improved use of Internet technology for information
dissemination and a seamless presentation of the USGS to our customers.

A concurrent meeting of USGS data managers, sponsored by the USGS
Information Council, the Information Management Policy Workshop, will be
held at EDC on May 13-14. It is planned that a joint session be held for
participants of both meetings to examine Federal information mandates
that affect activities in their respective domains.

A Workshop Steering Committee, comprised of representatives of WRD, GD,
NMD, BRD, and the Office of Program Support (OPS), under the auspices of
the ISCT, are currently working together to develop the plenary and
training session agendas, identify speakers, and coordinate meeting
logistics.  A Workshop home page has been established at:

Broad attendance and participation at NetTEM'97 is strongly encouraged
from all USGS divisions and OPS. Please consider active participation as
a speaker, panelist, moderator, or trainer, in the plenary and training
sessions.

If you have any questions regarding NetTEM'97, or wish to volunteer your
services, please contact any Steering Committee representative at your
earliest convenience, but no later than April 11, 1997.  To register, use
the on-line registration form.  To submit suggestions or comments
regarding the proposed plenary and training agendas, contact the Steering
Committee directly, or use the Message Board facility provided via the
home page.

I want to thank the Workshop Steering Committee for their efforts in
putting this program together. I hope to meet all you cybersurfers in
Sioux Falls in May!
