Schneider Assistant Chief Hydrologist for Technical Support Subject: Handbook for Preparing the State Annual Water-Data Report Using Framemaker and NWIS In September 1994 a FrameMaker Annual Data Report Work Group (FARWG) was established. The group was charged by the Planning and Implementation Committee (PIC) of the Distributed Information System (DIS) to develop guidelines and tools for facilitating the production of the annual data reports using FrameMaker and NWIS-II. It was suggested that a handbook or set of instructions be prepared for migrating from the systems currently used by the Districts. The work of the FARWG was suspended because the NWIS-II project was put on hold. In May 1997, the Water Resources Division (WRD) Computer Policy Advisory Committee decided that the development of a procedure for producing the annual data report using FrameMaker and DG/NWIS should be completed. Completion of this effort was also recommended by the Headquarters Review Team Report to the Chief Hydrologist, dated November 1996, Gary Paulachok and Don Vaupel, Co-Chairmen, . Resources to work on this project have been identified. A recent trip to the Maryland District Office produced ideas about how the process could be facilitated through the use of scripts. Scripts are being prepared to format NWIS output for easy import into FrameMaker. Maryland District Office personnel have agreed to test the prototype. The draft material will be modified, tested further, refined and packaged for release to all WRD offices as a recommended approach for preparing the annual water-data report. The anticipated release date for this information is no later than January 1, 1998.
