Hirsch (signed) Chief Hydrologist Subject: "Streamflow Information for the Nation," U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Fact Sheet, FS-006-97 Robert Mason and Tom Yorke produced the subject Fact Sheet. The intent of the Fact Sheet is to better inform our many customers of the changes in the availability of streamflow information, especially real-time streamflow information. The Fact Sheet also mentions the reality of the current program--that although more stations are coming on-line with data-collection platforms, the overall number of streamflow-gaging stations have been decreasing in the last few years. You will be receiving copies of this Fact Sheet directly from the printer by COB, Tuesday, February 25, 1997. Additional copies can be requested from: USGS Information Services Denver Federal Center, Box 25286 Denver, CO 80225 FAX: 303-202-4693 Please be proactive in ensuring that our traditional audiences, State and local agencies and cooperators, receive copies. Beyond this audience, think of additional groups who might make good use of the information, such as recreational interest groups and emergency planners and managers within your State. Additional points of contact might be State chapters of organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers (we will cover the national bases from headquarters), as well as State contacts for FEMA, NWS, and the Corps of Engineers, whether cooperators or not. We ask, too, that you distribute copies to field offices of elected representatives. Please cover as many of these offices as you can in the State. A cover note from you would be appropriate. The basic message that we would like to convey in the launch of this Fact Sheet is that of the benefits and concerns with the current network. It is important that public officials understand the tremendous potential of on-line streamflow information and the reality that we have a reduced network capability. Thank you in advance for your help in getting this important new Fact Sheet into the hands of those who can best use the information. If you have any questions, or would like to discuss other aspects of the launch, please contact Gail Wendt, Information Delivery Services, Office of Water Information, 703-648-5604, e-mail: gwendt. We also would be very interested to hear any feedback you receive from recipients of the Fact Sheet. Copy to: WRD Senior Staff ************************************************************* Robert M.
