Hirsch (signed) Chief Hydrologist Subject: Department and Bureau Safety Awards to the Water Resources Division The long-term success of the Water Resources Division's (WRD) safety program is very much dependent upon the efforts of all WRD personnel. In recognition of our safety efforts, the Department of the Interior (DOI) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have honored some members of our community for their outstanding safety program achievements. This is to acknowledge and express my gratitude to the entire USGS National Water-Quality Laboratory, Linda Gerner from the Utah District, and Roger Smith from the National Water-Quality Laboratory for their exemplary safety work. The National Water-Quality Laboratory was honored with a DOI Special Achievement Award for safety program accomplishments. The laboratory's incorporation of a "Team Approach" has assured safety program employee involvement and integration at every organizational level. This approach has resulted in minimizing or eliminating environmental or employee hazard exposure and substantially reduced hazardous material use. Linda Gerner was honored with the USGS Safety Management Award for her outstanding contributions and innovative initiatives. As the Utah District Collateral Duty Safety Officer, her enthusiasm has led to the development of a detailed respiratory protection plan and a hantavirus infection prevention plan. Roger Smith, the USGS National Water-Quality Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Officer, was honored with the USGS Safety Management Award for his efforts to ensure that the laboratory was complying with the numerous Federal and State regulations for managing hazardous waste. Safety is everyone's responsibility, and we all must work together to provide a safe work environment. ************************************************************* Robert M.
