Wilber) X-Sender: wgwilber@130.11.51.209 Subject: New Project Chiefs--Nutrient Synthesis and Trace Element Synthesis It is my very great pleasure to announce the selection of new project chiefs for two National Synthesis Projects that are part of the National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program. First, Jeff Stoner has been selected as the new Chief of the Nutrient National Synthesis Project. Jeff replaces Dennis Helsel who has served for the last 9 months as the Coordinator of the Bureau's Drinking Water Initiative. Jeff has a Bachelors in Geology from the University of Minnesota and a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University. He has been with the USGS since 1974, having served in the Montana, Pennsylvania and Minnesota Districts. Jeff has done an outstanding job of leading the Red River of the North NAWQA Study Unit investigation and brings a strong background in groundwater hydrology to the Synthesis projects. Jeff will relocate to Denver in a few months after making a successful transition The second announcement is that Dennis Helsel has been reassigned from the Drinking Water Initiative to lead a new National Synthesis project focused on trace elements. Dennis has exceptional technical and leadership skills as evidenced by his productivity leading the former Branch of Systems Analysis and the quality of work produced by the Nutrient National Synthesis team under his direction. Dennis' first task will be to develop a plan for the trace element synthesis that addresses the highest priority regional and national needs for this information and that takes advantage of the ongoing efforts focused on trace elements in the NAWQA Program, and in other programs, offices and divisions within the Bureau. Please join me in welcoming Jeff and Dennis to their new positions. Bill
