NTC Course Numbering System To: "E - All WRD Employees" cc: cc-edoc@ntc1serv.cr.usgs.gov Subject: NTC Course Numbering System Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Date: Mon, 02 Dec 1996 09:36:02 -0700 From: "Gloria J Armstrong, Training Technician, Denver, CO" All of the courses offered at the National Training Center (NTC) are identified by a number and a course title. The decision has been made to change the numbering system so that it will provide more information about the level and type of course being offered. Effective immediately, the following system is being used to identify training courses. The new number is based loosely on a university-type numbering system and will consist of four parts, each providing specific information about the course. The parts are (1) course type, (2) level of instruction, (3) a sequential number, and (4) the location, or host, of the training event. For example, the new number for G0043 - Basic Hydraulic Principles would become SW1004TC. The parts of the new number would break out as SW - 1 - 004 - TC Part 1 is one or two letters identifying the course type. A = Administrative B = Biology C = Computers GW = Ground Water ID = Interdisciplinary M = Management O = Other QW = Water Quality R = Reports S = Safety SW = Surface Water Part 2 is a single digit number indicating the level of the instruction. 1 = Basic 2 = Intermediate 3 = Advanced 4 = Correspondence Part 3 is a three digit sequential number. Part 4 is one or two letters indicating the location, or host, of the training event. C = Central Region N = Northeast Region S = Southeast Region TC = National Training Center W = Western Region Therefore, the old course number of G0043 becomes SW1004TC when renumbered. It tells you that it is a surface water course, taught at a basic level, it is sequentially numbered 004, and that it is offered by the NTC. Another example: G0222 - Water Quality Principles, would be renumbered to QW1022TC. This number (QW1022TC) tells you that it is a water quality course, taught at a basic level, it is sequentailly numbered 22, and that it is offered by the NTC. Another example: a previously unnumbered course being taught in the Southeast Region - Introduction to Supervision & Management in the WRD - would be numbered M1161S. This number (M1161S) tells you that it is a management course, taught at a basic level, sequentially numbered 161, and that it is offfered by the Southeast Region. A final example: G1404 - Interface of Hydrologic Models With GIS, would be renumbered to C3140TC. This number (C3140TC) tells you that it is a computer course, taught at an advanced level, sequentially numbered 140, and that it is offered at the NTC. The NTC has developed a master list of courses that correlates the old numbers and the new numbers. If anyone would like a copy of this master list, please contact Russ Smith at the NTC at (303) 236-4932 ext 246 or send an email to rsmithjr requesting a copy. Russ also will be happy to answer any questions you might have about the new system.
