                                MEMORANDUM

                                            October 30, 1995

To: Water Resources Division Senior Staff
         District Chiefs
         Branch and Office Chiefs

From: Robert M. Hirsch (signed)
         Chief Hydrologist

Subject: Reassignment of U.S. Geological Survey Geologic Division
         Personnel to Water Resources Division

Over the past several weeks, the Water Resources Division (WRD) has
issued 110 vacancy announcements that provided potential reassignment
opportunities for displaced Geologic Division employees. Geologic
Division employees applied to 63 of these vacancies. From those
applications, 25 were placed in various positions throughout WRD.
Of those 25, 16 are in scientific positions.

The reassignments involved the efforts of many employees to develop
vacancies, interview candidates, and select the best qualified
applicants in a very short timeframe. This all was accomplished in the
spirit of interdivisional cooperation while also filling some critical
staffing needs that have existed for some time. I greatly appreciate
the efforts of everyone involved.

As we move on past the Reduction-in-Force, I would remind you that there
are still many talented people from the Geologic Division who have lost
their jobs and should be considered for positions in WRD.
