Subject: MEETING ATTENDANCE

RESPONSE REQUIRED BY FEBRUARY 27, 1996

The U.S. Geological Survey is compiling a list of persons who plan to
participate in either of the following meetings during the Fourth Quarter
of this fiscal year:

(a) The 30th International Geological Congress, August 4-14, 1996,
Beijing, China

(b) The USA/CIS Third Joint Conference on Environmental Hydrology and
Hydrogeology, September 22-27, 1996, Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

If you anticipate travel to attend either of the above meetings, please
provide the following information to for_trav IMMEDIATELY:

a. Purpose of attendance (present paper, poster, chair session, keynote
address, etc.) Provide name of paper, session to be chaired, etc.

b. Source of funding for travel (transportation, M&IE, salary). Provide
specific, DETAILED information, regarding both source and amount of
funding.

c. Has supervisory approval been granted?

We believe that a substantial number of USGS employees may plan to attend
one of the meetings listed above and, if so, approval will be required from
the Assistant Secretary for Water and Science. As is true for
participation by substantial numbers of people in any large international
meeting, advance planning is critical to a successful approval process.
Responses received by this office will be consolidated into the Bureau
listing for submission to appropriate approving authorities. PLEASE NOTE:
Approval for participation in either meeting ALSO should be requested
through normal channels in response to the regular Fourth Quarter Meeting
Request (due this office by cob March 8).

As is customary, a solid justification for the travel and funding from a
source other than the USGS will be the best assurance for approval. If you
have questions, please contact anyone on the IWRP staff.
