These guidelines can be found at: http://www.usgs.gov/USGS/guidelines/usgs.webguide.html Effective immediately, the Bureau guidelines supersede Water Resources Division (WRD) Memorandum No. 95.04, "PUBLICATIONS--Publication of Documents on the Internet with World Wide Web." This memorandum gave District and equivalent Office Chiefs the authority to approve materials served on the WWW if the presentation met WRD guidelines. This redelegation of approval authority for WWW pages remains in effect under the new Bureau guidelines. The intent of the new guidelines is not to restrict but rather to empower our employees to be creative and to develop new methods of presenting information on the WWW while maintaining the high standards for which the USGS is known. I urge you to make sure that your "Webmaster" and all those preparing WWW materials are aware of the new guidelines. Implementation of the new guidelines should present few problems for sites presently following the WRD guidelines. I wish to congratulate the ISCT for their work on the new Bureau guidelines, as well as the WRD Strategic Planning for Internet Dissemination Evaluation and Retrieval (SPIDER) Team for their successful work on the earlier guidelines. If you have any questions about the new guidelines, please call Ken Lanfear, Office of Water Information, at (703) 648-6852--or e-mail (lanfear@usgs.gov). (signed) Lewis V. Wade Assistant Chief Hydrologist for Water Information Distribution: A, B, DC This memorandum supersedes WRD Memorandum No. 95.04. This memorandum is being distributed electronically only.
