USGS employees with an interest in data management are invited to attend a day of presentations on Tuesday, July 30, in the USGS National Center auditorium. The presentations will provide an overview of Federal data and information policies and trends, and will highlight key USGS data management activities, data holdings, and challenges. The presentations are part of a two-day workshop sponsored by the Director's Office of Program Planning and Coordination. The goal of the workshop is improved data management practices through the sharing of experiences and expertise, and by identifying collaborative opportunities. The presentations will begin at 8:30 am with a keynote address by Bonnie McGregor, Associate Director for Programs. The morning will feature presentations by staff from the Department of the Interior, Office of Management and Budget, Federal Geographic Data Committee, National Archives and Records Administration, and the Library of Congress. These speakers will cover Federal information policy, data archiving and access, digital libraries, and other major issues and directions in data management. The afternoon will feature USGS briefings by the Director's office, the Geologic, National Mapping, and Water Resources Divisions, the Office of Program Support, and the National Biological Service. Afternoon briefings will provide an overview of topics including USGS data holdings, key data management activities, critical issues, customer types, and future directions.
