IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL USGS NATIONAL CENTER LAN USERS Date: Mon, 27 Nov 1995 15:50:11 -0400 To: "USGS Employees at Headquarters" Subject: IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL USGS NATIONAL CENTER LAN USERS IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL USGS NATIONAL CENTER LAN USERS It is necessary to expand the number of electronic addresses ("IP addresses") available for users and equipment at the National Center. In order to do this, a change in the netmask and broadcast address is needed in the software of each user station or piece of network equipment that is running TCP/IP. The expansion of the IP address range will go into effect Friday, December 1, 1995 at 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time. It is requested that each TCP/IP PC and Mac user at the National Center modify the network software on his/her user station anytime prior to December 1, 1995 or anytime after December 1, 1995 but before using the network facilities of the workstation. The software should be modified to reflect the following new information (some workstations/implementations might not require explicit specification of the broadcast address): SUBNET MASK = 255.255.240.0 (or xfffff000 ) BROADCAST ADDRESS = 130.11.63.255 If you are not certain how to change the subnet mask and broadcast address, or if you are not certain if you are a TCP/IP user, please contact your division LAN administrator before December 1 for assistance. If you are using a Unix workstation, your system administrator will be changing the subnet mask and broadcast address for you. Following is a list of the division LAN administrators at the National Center: AD/ OPS Bob Arnberg ( x7225 ) DO Barbara Gilroy ( x7048 ) ISD / OPS Barbara Gilroy ( x7048 ) GD Carolyn Lumb ( x6643 ) Jane Timmins ( x6082 ) NMD Jim Stapleton ( x5568 ) WRD Daphne Chinn ( x5612 )
