Lenox, Chief International Water Resources Program Subject: FOREIGN TRAVEL--FY 97 First Quarter Foreign Travel If you are planning foreign travel to participate in a scientific meeting, conference, symposia, workshop, or training activity during the first quarter (October 1 - December 31, 1996), please complete the attached form and forward, through supervisory channels via EMAIL, to for_trav by COB June 14. After approval by Division management, your request will be consolidated into a Bureau listing of proposed foreign travel for the first quarter and forwarded to the Associate Director for Operations for review. The information that you have provided will be used to initiate your Foreign Travel Certification (Form DI-1175). Requirements for travel to Canada are outlined in Water Resources Division Memorandum No. 95.48. Canadian Customs officials now require specific forms of identification for entry into Canada. Acceptable identification includes (1) valid passport, (2) original voter's registration card; or (3) original or certified (with notary stamp) Birth Certificate. It is important to note that a U.S. driver's license is no longer an accepted form of identification. If you are planning foreign travel and do not have a passport, please contact Lory Severin for instructions on how to apply (Phone: 703-648-6686, Fax; 703-648-6687, or email: lseverin@usgs.gov or for_trav). A minimum of 4 weeks is required to obtain an Official Passport. If you expect to accept reimbursement of travel expenses from a non-Federal source, you must complete, sign, and mail to this office a DI-2000. It will be forwarded, along with the DI-1175 to the appropriate approving authority. After approval, the DI-2000 will be forwarded to the Bureau Ethics Counselor for filing, and the DI-1175 will be mailed to you. Travel to accomplish field work or collaborative research is not included in the quarterly listing and can be processed at any time; however, this type of travel must be forwarded to the Associate Director for Operations a minimum of 21 days prior to departure. Please continue to forward to us, as soon as information is available, any request to travel abroad for the purpose of accomplishing field work or collaborative research. A final reminder--requests to attend a meeting outside the United States (during the first quarter) must reach this office by COB June 14. Travel requests that are not included in the quarterly meeting list require a special justification and may be denied.
