Fordyce Acting Chief, Office of Human Resources Subject: Extension of Voluntary Early Out Authority Through FY 1997 The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has extended the voluntary retirement authority granted to the Department of the Interior through September 30, 1997. The USGS has decided not to restrict the use of the authority beyond limitations placed by OPM. Therefore, employees may retire early under this authority if they meet the following conditions: 1) they are age 50 with 20 years of service; or 2) they have 25 years of service at any age; and 3) they have been on the rolls of the Department of the Interior for at least 30 days as of August 29, 1996; and 4) they remain on the rolls of the Department of the Interior continuously until they retire. The extension of voluntary early out authority will not be accompanied by buyout authority, and we have no expectation that buyouts will be granted in the Department of the Interior at any future time. If you have questions about the extension of the early out authority, please call your servicing personnel office. Supervisors should make certain that this information is passed on to employees without access to electronic mail. -- Kathleen Rutledge Human Resources Office Office of Program Support U.S. Geological Survey
