Survey Manual In Reply Refer To: Mail Stop 201 MEMORANDUM To: Acting Office and Service Center Chiefs From: William F. Gossman, Jr. Acting Chief, Office of Program Support Subject: Survey Manual As we have discussed briefly in past staff meetings, many of our Survey Manual (SM) chapters and Instructional Memoranda are no longer current, and we need to update or cancel them. After considering several possible approaches to this long-standing problem, I have decided to apply mandatory sunset provisions to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) directives. We will phase in the updating over the next 2 years to provide adequate time for originating offices to review, cancel, or reissue directives exceeding the automatic expiration date. I will distribute a copy of the planned approach and a memorandum notifying the Operations Council. These documents provide the detail you will need to get started on this important project. John Cordyack, the USGS Directives Officer, will be contacting you to provide additional explanation and a list of affected directives for which you are responsible. As we proceed with this effort, I encourage you to take the opportunity to replace outdated SM directives with more concise ones that contain only essential information. Consider the OPS Home Page as the primary medium to supplement SM information with appropriate service contact, procedural, and other "how to" information so that the new SM will be shorter and easier to maintain. - -- Lesley Levi USGS Office of Program Support llevi@usgs.gov (703)648-7202 - ---End of forwarded mail from "Lesley Levi" - -- Carole Carter Office of Program Support Phone: (703) 648-7204 U.
