WATER QUALITY--Analytical methods; Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Carbonaceous In Reply Refer To: September 22, 1980 EGS Mail Stop 412 QUALITY OF WATER BRANCH TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM NO. 80.28 Subject: WATER QUALITY--Analytical methods; Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Carbonaceous The subject provisional method is attached, and is approved for use in the Water Resources Division. The method departs from customary methods for determining Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) in its use of a chemical inhibitor to block nitrification, thus preventing the nitrogenous, or second stage, BOD from being consumed. Values obtained from application of this method should be entered into WATSTORE under a code specifying the carbonaceous form even though only a 5-day value may be obtained, a value which should not, even in the absence of the chemical inhibitor, include the nitrogenous DOD. Appropriate WATSTORE parameter codes are listed at the beginning of the method and will shortly appear in the WATSTORE parameter list. Questions or comments regarding the application of this method should be directed to Chief, Quality of Water Branch, MS 412 (FTS 928-6834). Please distribute copies of this memorandum and attached method to the appropriate offices. R.J. Pickering Enclosure Distribution: A, B, S, FO, PO
