Subject:  PUBLICATIONS - Supplement to TWRI Book 5,
                         Chapter A3

The attached description of equipment and sampling procedures 
for the collection of water samples for carbon analysis 
should be considered as supplemental information to the 
instructions in TWRI manual Book 5, Chapter A3, "Methods for 
Analysis of Organic Substances in Water."  The equipment and 
procedures described in the attachment are recommended by the 
Task Group on Organic Substances in Water and the Quality of 
Water Branch as the best means of collecting water samples 
for dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved inorganic 
carbon (DIC), suspended organic carbon (SOC), and suspended 
inorganic carbon (SIC) data.

A complete set of instructions for collection and analysis of 
all forms of carbon will be included in a revision of that 
section of the manual.  This revision is currently in 
preparation.
