Subject:  TRITIUM ANALYSES - Background Samples Collected
                             in 1961-62.

In the fall of 1961, District Chiefs were requested to collect and
store three well-water samples for information on back-ground
tritium levels.  In the spring of 1962, subsequent to intensive
nuclear testing, it was requested that the shallowest well be
resampled.

The Tritium Laboratory of the Quality of Water Branch is prepared
to analyze part of this national sampling and you are requested to
send the suite of four samples as soon as possible.  The samples
should be carefully packed and shipped to the following address by
Railway Express, using the standard GBL with charges to Account
No. 5-450004:

          U.S. Geological Survey
          Tritium Laboratory
          Room 102, Old Post Office Building
          12th and Pennsylvania Ave.
          Washington, D.C.

If the samples are no longer available for any reason, please
inform us.
