Summary

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. PP1773_unit_alt_grid is a polygon shapefile of surface altitudes for 16 hydrogeologic units as described in report Professional Paper 1773. Surface altitudes were interpolated and discretized to the 2-mile by 2-mile rotated grid used to simulate groundwater flow in the Atlantic Coastal Plain of North and South Carolina. Purpose

The dataset pp1773_unit_alt_grid shapefile represents the altitude of aquifer and confining unit surfaces of the Atlantic Coastal Plain of North and South Carolina described in Professional Paper 1773. The three-dimensional hydrogeologic framework was determined from borehole geophysical logs and well-to-well correlations. Detailed stratigraphic data from coreholes and drill cuttings were collected to assist with correlations, although the primary concern was the continuity of hydraulically connected permeable and less permeable strata through the Coastal Plain. Quaternary through Cretaceous sedimentary sections were separated into component hydrogeologic units, mapped, and described across the study area using groundwater levels, borehole geophysical logs, paleontologic data, borehole lithologic logs, chloride concentrations, aquifer-test data, and surface resistivity measurements.
