Summary

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. awc_UCRB_Maurer_resolution.asc is an Esri ASCII grid representing the available water capacity (AWC) for the Upper Colorado River Basin. AWC is the amount of water that a soil can hold, and is between a soil’s field capacity and the wilting point. In Soil-Water Balance model recharge simulations, AWC is multiplied by root zone depth to define the maximum water capacity of a cell, and any soil-moisture exceeding this amount is converted to recharge.

Purpose

The awc_UCRB_Maurer_resolution.asc grid was developed as part of the investigation of changes in groundwater recharge in the Upper Colorado River Basin in response to potential climate change. This investigation uses the Soil-Water Balance model to estimate groundwater recharge. This project was supported by the USGS Groundwater Resources Program and the Bureau of Reclamation. The report documenting this and other datasets for the UCRB Soil-Water Balance recharge model is: Tillman, F.D, 2015, Documentation of input datasets for the soil-water balance groundwater recharge model of the Upper Colorado River Basin: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2015–1160, 17 p., http://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20151160.
