Quigley, S.M., 2003, Ohio-drainage stream centerline coverage for use with Water Resources Investigations Report 03-4164: U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/P9VC871R.

Summary

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This vector coverage of hydrography centerlines was derived from the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), and encompasses all of Ohio and portions of Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. This coverage is comprised of 105 Catalog Units (CUs) obtained from http://nhd.usgs.gov/. Each CU approximately represents a single 8-digit Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC).

Purpose

This coverage was used to determine parameters required to use regression equations presented by Koltun (2003). This dataset can be used to determine the location and extent of hydrography based solely on the centerlines of hydrographic features in Ohio and portions of Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York. Area and boundary features of lakes, ponds, etc., cannot be determined from this dataset. This dataset was created to derive data related to drainage density and main-channel length for selected basins inside and outside of Ohio. The scale of the dataset is 1:100,000 and should not be used with data at scales greater than this.
