Purpose

This dataset is intended as a county base for various applications, such as to create county statistics, or county weighting factors by land use classifications. County weighting factors of selective land classifications are used with quantitative county data to estimate, for instance basin-level pesticide application, fertilizer use, and conservation tillage acres. These data were developed to support hydrologic studies that are part of the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program. The goal of the NAWQA program is to develop long-term consistent and comparable information on streams, ground water, and aquatic ecosystems to support sound management and policy decisions (Gilliom and others, 1995).
