An existing three-dimensional model (MODFLOW-2000) by Petkewich and Campbell was modified to simulate potential changes in groundwater- level conditions caused by withdrawals from a proposed well in the Middendorf aquifer near Monocks, South Carolina. A single well was added to the existing model in the cell at row 67 and column 119 in layer 7 (the Middendorf aquifer). Two scenarios were created by modifying the Base Case simulation which is documented in the model documentation report (https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2009/5185/) and data release (https://dx.doi.org/10.5066/F7JW8C1K). The proposed well was pumped at 0.5 million gallons per day for the 'proposed well 1.5 MGD' scenario and 1.5 million gallons per day for the 'proposed well 1.5 MGD' scenario. This was the only change made to the model for this data release. This data release was created at the request of Mount Pleasant Waterworks to document the effects of a proposed well. This data release contains all of the model input and out files needed to run the model simulations described above. Data tables and figures of the model output are included in the ancillary directory. The data release also includes MODFLOW-2000 source code used to run the model simulations. Descriptions of the data in each subdirectory are given to facilitate understanding of this data release. Files descriptions are provided for select files to provide additional information that may be of use for understanding this data release. The model simulations were run with MODFLOW-2000 (ver 1.18.01). The source code for MODFLOW-2000 has been included in this data release. Support is provided for correcting errors in the data release and clarification of the modeling conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey. Users are encouraged to review the model documentation report (https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2009/5185/) and this data release to understand the purpose, construction, and limitations of this model. Reconstructing the data release from the online data release: ------------------------------------------------------------- This data release is available from: https://dx.doi.org/10.5066/F7319T24 The models will run successfully only if the original directory structure is correctly restored. The data release is broken into several pieces to reduce the likelihood of download timeouts. Small files (readme.txt and modelgeoref.txt) are available as uncompressed files. All other files are zipped at the subdirectory level. For example, the files in the "georef" subdirectory are zipped into a zip file named "georef.zip". All zip files should be unzipped into a directory with the same name as the zip file name without the .zip extension. The highest-level directory structure of the original data release is: sir20095185-scen2016/ ancillary/ bin/ georef/ model/ output/ source/ The full directory structure of the data release and the zip files associated with each subdirectory are listed below. System requirements: -------------------- The models contained in this data release were run using the mf2k.exe executable in the bin directory of this data release. The models requires approximately 64 MB of available Random Access Memory (RAM). The models have been run successfully on computers running 64-bit Windows 7 OS (Service Pack 1). Optional system requirements: ----------------------------- None Running the model(s): --------------------- The simulations can be run by copying the executable into the model directory of interest, opening a terminal and typing: mf2k.exe model.mfn For example, the base case simulation can be run by copying the executable into the model directory of interest, opening a terminal and typing: mf2k.exe 2008MPw7_base.mfn to run the base case simulation. The other simulations can be run in a similar fashion by replacing "2008MP7_base.mfn" with the appropriate scenario simulation MODFLOW-2000 name files and running from the appropriate subdirectory in the model/ subdirectory (for example, run the pumping well 1.5 million gallon per day scenario (2008MPW7_PW_1.5MGD.mfn) from the model/model_PW1_1.5MGD/subdirectory). Other possible MODFLOW name files are: 1. 2008MPW7_PW_1.5MGD.mfn 2. 2008MPW7_PW_0.5MGD.mfn The output from the scenario simulations all have the same name but are created in the appropriate output directory. For example, the base case scenario model results are saved to the output/output.base_case_scenario directory. NOTE: The models must be run using the mf2k.exe executable located in the bin directory in this data release. Files: ----- readme.txt : This file documents the additional scenario analysis completed using the existing model published in https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2009/5185/ and in https://dx.doi.org/10.5066/F7JW8C1K. The structure, directories and files, and instructions on how to run the model for this data release are also included. modelgeoref.txt : ASCII file with the four corners of the model domain. Model data files are in the NAD 1983 StatePlane South Carolina FIPS_3900_Feet projection. ancillary/ Description: ----------- This directory contains the figures and data for this data release. The scenarios were simulated from 2009 to 2050. These simulations include the base model up to the year 2008. The predictive simulations utilize 2 different pumping rates in a single proposed well in the Monocks Corner, South Carolina area beginning in 2015. Changes to the pumping rates of the proposed well in the Monocks Corner area is the only differences between the input files for the base scenario and the proposed well 1.5 mgd and proposed well 0.5 mgd scenarios.
